SME: Small Medical Enterprise
After the fall of the ‘Iron Curtain’, a great deal changed in the Eastern Block. For general practitioners and the entire medical sector a great deal changed since the beginning of the nineteen-nineties. Not only on the medical level, but also the free market is a new fact for them. Doctors are now individual responsible for the ‘running’ of their practices. To develop basic healthcare into a high quality service represents a challenge for this sector. This SME project addresses the basic healthcare training needs (most importantly of general practitioners).

Groups of 15 to 20 general practitioners are offered new insights and skills via training weekends on the subject of organising their medical practices. The content of these courses extends from ‘patient- friendliness to administration’ and from ‘hygiene to price policy’. These courses are designed to be practical; no one-way traffic from the instructor to the meeting, but a great deal of interaction of the participants.
Via training and exchanges in Flanders, in Romania and other countries (e.g. Poland) this project was able to accumulate experience and knowledge from others.
In December 2003, this project ended after 2.5 years, but the training courses for general practitioners continue.

With the financial support of the Flemish Government.
